Just A Little

Okay, so I haven't posted anything for the past two weeks. Well I wish I could say that I've been on vacation and have been unable to get to a computer for a while. Ahhh...if only.

Reality is I have been swamped! Let's see, first I finally took a sewing class. Which I loved!! Now I am inspired to finish my master bedroom make-over but that will have to wait. I have been working at TELC since mid-August. I am only scheduled to work on Wednesdays and Fridays but I have been subbing. Good thing too because I have also decided to take on another project. As if I didn't already have enough to do.

I just started classes at Region XI to get my alternative teaching certification EC-4 ESL. It is a condensed class that will take up most of my free time (which is already almost non-existent). The class ends mid-December and then I will have to take a test which will allow me to get a job as a intern teacher. After my "internship" of one year I can receive my certification. So as you can see I really have a lot on my plate. I will do my best to keep up with my blog over the next 10 weeks but if I am absent please know that I am most likely studying or working.

Meanwhile, say a prayer that I can keep up with all the young students in my class. I met one guy on Saturday who asked me when I graduated college. I told him 1993. He preceded to tell me that that was the year he graduated high school! Oh well, with age comes wisdom, right?

I Found It!!

I have been looking and looking for someone to give me a refresher course on how to sew. I enrolled in a class at Joann's that was cancelled (because they couldn't get someone to teach it). I have asked around and searched the Internet from time to time over the past two years. Well after all my searching I FINALLY found a place to learn how to sew and more!

Make Shop & Studio offers sewing, home decor and different crafting classes at reasonable prices. Make is located in a the Bishop Arts District which is only about 25 minutes from my house and has some great boutiques, art studios and restaurants. It is the perfect place to for someone like me to spend an afternoon getting decorating ideas. Oh yeah, I already have it scheduled in my day timer ;) They also offer private lessons for people who would prefer a more one on one approach.

I am so psyched! I am finally going to be able to finish the home decorating project that I began almost three years ago! I guess perseverance does pay off eventually. Woohoo!

We experienced a miscarriage last night. Scott and I are very upset about this especially after seeing the baby's heartbeat and being almost through the first trimester. As you must know, this is a difficult time for our family. We had hoped to expand it and now are at a loss to know what will happen next. We have faith in God that everything happens for a reason including something like this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

America Needs Environmental Education

Dear Member of Congress,

Our nation is grappling with complicated environmental issues that affect all of us as well as generations to come. It is more critical than ever that U.S. schools provide students with a solid environmental education. However, our schools are increasingly leaving environmental education behind and reallocating resources to emphasize math and reading instruction in order to meet mandates under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Congress must pass the No Child Left Inside Act, which will amend the National Environmental Education Act (NEEA) to:

1. Extend the NEEA through fiscal year 2009.

2. Introduce incentives for state educational agencies to create their own Environmental Literacy Plan. State plans would integrate environmental education into K-12 curriculum and ensure that graduates are environmentally literate.

3. Expand the scope of NEAA by creating the National Capacity Environmental Education Grant Program, which authorizes the Secretary of the USDE to award grants to State Educational Agencies with Environmental Literacy Plans.

4. Authorize funding to help states, schools systems, and environmental education partners implement their state's Environmental Literacy Plan.

5. Provide $14 million additional funding for teacher and professional development training programs to support environmental education.

The No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act goes a long way toward giving environmental education the attention it deserves. Please support strengthening the NEAA by supporting environmental education.

This is the only photo I was able to take of Ryan's first trip to Chuck E Cheese. He absolutely LOVED it! He was so excited to go to his friend Jack's birthday party. But, I spent most of the time chasing Ryan from game to game. By the time we left we were both exhausted! Next time we go, Dad is coming with us...I definitely need back-up at this place!

Fossil Rim

Last Friday, Scott, Ryan, our friend Alex and I went on a little road trip to Fossil Rim. I just love going there. It is never the same and you never know what you'll see. We were all so busy feeding the animals that these were the only pictures we took. Alex was nice enough to take these pictures of Ryan at the petting zoo.

I just wish I could drive and click a camera at the same time. I would have loved to have gotten a few pictures of all of us feeding all the deer. Especially the ones that would slobber all over the car (and us) when they stuck there head in the car. Ahh...good times ;)

I am pregnant and trying to be frugal. Which is not an easy thing to do when it comes to finding nice maternity clothes. That is until I came across Divine Consign.

I went to the Arlington sale this past week and scored a truck, big wheel, pj's and a shirt for Ryan. I also picked up a few maternity clothes for me. A total of 5 sweaters, 5 shirts, a pair of shorts and 2 pairs of pants. My total purchase was $48.12! I couldn't believe it!

What if there was a vote to decide if $13.5 billion in tax breaks for oil companies should go into oil alternatives, like solar and wind? What would you want your Senator to do?

Well, as you probably guessed, there was such a vote. We needed 60 votes to prevail, and 59 of them were in. But John McCain ducked the vote.

As a result, instead of powering millions of homes with clean energy and building next-generation solar technology, we're giving ExxonMobil and other companies billions in tax breaks at a time when they're already making record profits.

This vote is political dynamite. And if we all pitch in, we can make sure voters know about McCain's give-away to big oil. And it's a twofer—MoveOn.org will run the ad in the battleground state of North Carolina to help remind voters that Senator Elizabeth Dole, who's up for re-election, voted for big oil tax breaks, too.

My Morning Sickness Rant

Here's the truth, I love my son and am excited about having another child, but I absolutely hate being pregnant. I turn into a cow, my ankles cease to exist, and I become an insecure mess. I wake up what seems like a million times during the night, either to pee, to throw up, or just for fun I suppose. Okay, maybe not a million times but it sure feels like it.

I cannot get enough sleep. Today Scott took Ryan most of the day and I just laid in bed all day feeling like roadkill. I did manage to get up and take a shower (which made me feel like fainting). I have made best friends with the toilet, and have basically become a hobbit in my own home, what else could I possibly complain about?

Okay, I'm done (for now)! Please understand that this rant has come from a woman that is only 2 months pregnant and has just realized she has 8 more months of pregnancy to endure. I can get through it...I just mightneed to vent a little! Sorry!

Tonight I am studying for the math portion of the THEA test. I passed the writing and reading portions of the test when I went in "cold turkey." However, I failed to pass the math portion by 2 points! This really sucks because I have always disliked algebra and most math classes. Now I am having to study the same crap that I learned (and subsequently forgot) about 20 years ago!

Well, I better get to it...wish me luck. Better yet, please say a prayer for me. I have a feeling I might need some divine intervention to get through this ;)

One Sleepy Mommy

Maybe it's just because I'm in my first trimester or maybe it's because I am a little stressed out, either way I have been sleeping much more than usual lately. My new daily sleep routine goes something like this:

Go to bed sometime between 11pm and midnight. Wake-up at least 1-3 times during the night because of the cat or Ryan. Wake up at 7am when Ryan comes in to tell me good morning. Take a nap usually in the morning around 9am or 10am and sleep until Noon or 1pm.

Is that a lot? For some reason when I add it up in my head it doesn't seem like all that much, but Scott told me today that he has noticed that I am sleeping more. All I know is I could use at least one more nap sometime in the afternoon. Or, better yet, maybe I will try to get to bed by 10pm. Yeah, let's see if I can pull that one off!

My Little Secret Revealed

Okay, I have been ready to burst keeping this secret under wraps until going to the doctor today, now it official...I'm pregnant!

Here's the story...a couple of weeks ago I got up at the crack of dawn to go to the doctor to have my stomach scoped. I was diagnosed a while back with a couple of stomach ulcers and I needed to have the doctor look to see if they had healed or not. I had to wait what seemed like forever. After a while the nurse called me back and told me she needed a urine sample, etc. I was just getting settled in when the nurse came in to tell me that they could not perform the procedure because the routine pregnancy test came back POSITIVE! I went and had the blood work done and I am indeed "with child."

I went to the doctor today and saw the baby's heartbeat! I'm in love, already! I am only about 6 weeks pregnant and given my age I am not out of the woods yet. I have to get through the next 6 weeks without any problems and I also have to make sure the baby is healthy.

Even after hearing all the wonderful news from the doctor I was still somewhat hesitant to make this announcement. Then it dawned on me...non of this is really up to me. I mean I can do my best to eat right, take care of myself, etc., but at some point I know that it is up to God whether or not I am meant to have another wonderful healthy child. So, I figured I would choose to have faith that this is meant to be and I should celebrate the news by sharing it.

So now you know. I hope I don't jinx anything by sharing the news so early! I'm just so happy, I couldn't help myself!

Congress Approves Phthalate Ban

Good news for parents and children everywhere: Congress has agreed to a ban on three dangerous phthalates in products made for children under 12. The decision came in spite of the chemical industry's desperate (and well-funded) attempt to shut the provision down. Exxon-Mobil alone spent a significant portion of its $22 million lobbying budget on the project, according to Lyndsey Layton at The Washington Post.

The provision, which would also require extensive testing of three other types of phthalates before potentially banning them, is a part of a major piece of legislation overhauling the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Although President Bush has said that he disagrees with the phthalate ban (no surprise there), I'm willing to speculate that it would probably be hard for him to veto the entire bill, since its purpose is to protect American consumers.

This is, of course, a major step in the right direction, but is it a harbinger of major change to come? Andy Igrejas of the Pew Charitable Trusts told Layton,

"The debate over this one set of chemicals is a referendum on a broken system. Congress saw just how screwed up the system is in protecting people from chemicals, especially children."

Meanwhile, Layton writes that the ban "signals an important crack in the chemical industry's ability to fend off federal regulation and suggests that the landscape may be shifting to favor consumers." Here's hoping they're right -- we're about due for a landscape shift.

President Bush Signs "Conquer Childhood Cancer Act"

This legislation was named in memory of Caroline Pryce Walker, daughter of Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-OH), who succumbed to neuroblastoma in 1999 at age nine, and will dramatically increase federal investment into childhood cancer research.

The bill authorizes $30 million annually over five years, providing funding for collaborative pediatric cancer clinical trials research, to create a population-based national childhood cancer database, and to further improve public awareness and communication regarding available treatment and research for children with cancer and their families.

Are They Still There?

Tomorrow is the big day! My doctor is going to look at the inside of my stomach to see if my ulcers have healed. I am praying that there are no signs of any ulcers. At the same time I have to be realistic. Let's just say that I am not the most relaxed person in the world and being married and having a toddler can occasionally stress me out. Hence the need for prayers!

July 17, 2008 (Bethesda, MD) - CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation salutes the United States Senate for its passage of the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, which promises to significantly increase federal investment into childhood cancer research.

The bill, first introduced in the Senate by Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Norm Coleman (R-MN), passed by unanimous consent, echoing a similar 416-0 vote June 12th in the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) requested, and received, this unanimous consent on the Senate floor.

The bill authorizes $30 million annually over five years, providing funding for collaborative pediatric cancer clinical trials research, to create a population-based national childhood cancer database, and to further improve public awareness and communication regarding available treatment and research for children with cancer and their families.

"Too many young people's lives were cut short by cancer, but their hopes were not," said Reed. "We have made great advances in treating cancer, but there is still much more to be done. The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act will deliver much needed hope and support to children and families battling cancer and more resources for vital pediatric cancer research programs."

Senator Coleman, an original sponsor, noted that the legislation passed unanimously in both Houses of Congress, and lauded the overwhelming bi-partisan support of the measure, which addresses a critical national health issue that is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

"Passage of the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act in the Senate is a monumental step in the fight against childhood cancer," said Coleman. "I am proud that my colleagues were able to come together and pass legislation that will provide the resources to not only support children and families with childhood cancer, but also find a cure."

Missing in Action

Yes, this week I have been MIA when it comes to my blog. I've had so much going on lately.

First, Scott is in the process of looking for a new job. This means that along with my normal jobs of mommy, wife, maid, cook, chauffeur, accountant, etc., I have taken on another job, that of personal assistant. I have been spending most of my nights looking online at jobs for Scott and/or helping him with his vitae and resume. We may have to move or we may stay here,we just have to see what happens. Either way, I think this is an opportunity to bring Scott and I closer and for Scott to grow in his career.

I also took the THEA test this week. My plan is to apply to get my alternative teaching certification. I want to take the classes this fall, depending on Scott's job situation. Obviously, if we move I will have to apply to a different school.

I will be happy when some of the uncertainties we have been dealing with have been resolved. I am a "planner" so all these loose ends are starting to get on my nerves. But, whenever things get to the point that I think I just can't take anymore all I have to do is look at Ryan. He usually has a big grin on his face. He has fun doing just about anything. If nothing else he has taught me that you really don't need much to be happy. As long as I have Scott and Ryan I know that everything will be just fine!

This past year my former housekeeper told me that her kids used to model for Kim Dawson and really liked it. She went on to tell me all the details and I decided to send the modeling agency pictures of Ryan. Almost six months later I received an email letting us know that Ryan "has been selected to be considered as a prospective model with Kim Dawson Agency." Ryan is scheduled for his "preliminary interview at the agency" this Tuesday! I am so excited for our little man.

Please wish him luck! We'll let you know how it turns out. Who knows...our little man may end up being a super toddler model. Either way, we think he is simply adorable from the inside out!

In Memory of Green Green (1993-2008)

Today I had to euthanize my cat, Green. It has been one of the most awful things I have ever had to do. She was a wonderful companion and will be missed greatly. She was almost 15 years old and had been a great comfort in my life through dating jerks, getting married, moving to the country, losing twins, losing my stepmother, losing my dad, moving, going through a divorce, being severely depressed, renovating a house, moving, renovating a condo, getting remarried, moving one last time, and having a baby. I found this online and thought it would help to share it:

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; Her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying him faster and faster.

Six married men will be dropped on an island with one car and 3 kids each for six weeks.

- Each kid will play two sports and either take music or dance classes.
- There is no fast food.
- Each man must take care of his 3 kids; keep his assigned house clean, correct all homework, and complete science projects, cook, do laundry, and pay a list of "pretend" bills with not enough money.
- In addition, each man will have to budget in money for groceries each week.
- Each man must remember the birthdays of all their friends and relatives, and send cards out on time--no emailing.
- Each man must also take each child to a doctor's appointment, a dentist appointment and a haircut appointment.
- He must make one unscheduled and inconvenient visit per child to the Urgent Care.
- He must also make cookies or cupcakes for a social function.
- Each man will be responsible for decorating his own assigned house, planting flowers outside and keeping it presentable at all times.
- The men will only have access to television when the kids are asleep and all chores are done.
- The men must shave their legs, wear makeup daily, adorn themselves with jewelry, wear uncomfortable yet stylish shoes, keep fingernails polished and eyebrows groomed.
- During one of the six weeks, the men will have to endure severe abdominal cramps, back aches,and have extreme, unexplained mood swings but never once complain or slow down from other duties.
- They must attend weekly school meetings, church, and find time at least once to spend the afternoon at the park or a similar setting.
- They will need to read one or more books to the kids each night and in the morning, feed them, dress them, brush their teeth and comb their hair by 7:00 am.
- A test will be given at the end of the six weeks, and each father will be required to know all of the following information: each child's birthday, height, weight, shoe size, clothes size and doctor's name. Also the child's weight at birth, length, time of birth, and length of labor, each child's favorite color, middle name,favorite snack, favorite song, favorite drink, favorite toy, biggest fear and what they want to be when they grow up.

The kids vote them off the island based on performance. The last man wins only if...he still has enough energy to be intimate with his spouse at a moment's notice.

If the last man does win, he can play the game over and over and over again for the next 18-25 years eventually earning the right to be called Mother!

I just started a new hobby, shopping for clothes to see how much money I can save. It's actually kind of fun. For instance, I have started shopping at area resale shops for summer clothes (these shops are mostly in DFW area but some of them have stores nation wide). I found some Great Buys at Plato's Closet, even though it claims to specialize in clothes for teens and twenty somethings" I found some great deals on t-shirts and tops there. The carry GAP, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and more. I got 4 tops for under $20. I did have try on a lot of clothes, but in the end it was well worth it. Then I went next door to Once Upon a Child. I picked up 3 shirts for Ryan for less than $12. These shirts were all name brands like Oshkosh, Polo, and GAP. Next I went to Feminine Fashion Consignment in Fort Worth and picked up a Harold's top (that was originally $68) for under $15. This is one store that always has lots of nice designer items for cheap prices. If you check out the link they even have special sales each month where you can get everything for 30% - 50% off. I went to there sister store in Arlington, ReRun Resale Boutique , and picked up two pairs of JCrew Shorts for $10 each! These are the same shorts I tried on at the JCrew Outlet (that cost $42) but decided to wait until they went on sale before I bought them. These two stores also have lots of great designer shoes. I am still kicking myself for not grabbing a pair of Cole Hahn sandals for $18 when I had the chance! What can I say, it was a rookie mistake. By the experience I learned that if you really like something you better get it before someone else snaps it up.

I need your help in getting the cancer drug Avastin (a form of chemo) covered by Medicare. This is the same drug, Avastin, Senator Kennedy's doctor prescribed for his brain tumor. However Medicare will not approve it as a 1st tier treatment. It is very expensive, but also very effective. If you get cancer after age 65 you don't have access to the best treatments. If Medicare doesn't approve a treatment your supplemental insurance won't approve it either. That is scary!!! It is over $30,000 per "dose" and so the doctors don't prescribe it even if it might help since Medicare won't cover. And, the secondary insurance won't pay for it when Medicare doesn't. If you are poor, you can get it on a special program thru the drug companies, but if you are regular working folks, you make too much money to get it covered.

Please write your representative regarding this matter. you can even cut and paste the message above. Here is the info to send to the congress persons from your district. The link that is provided gives the list of your representatives and hooks you into their e-mail addresses.

George Carlin Dead at 71

I was shocked today when I heard that George Carlin, the much-honored American stand-up comedian whose long career was distinguished by pointed social commentary that placed him on the cultural cutting edge, died Sunday in Santa Monica, Calif.

The above clip is from one of his most memorable shows (beware, it's rated R at best). I think I watched every HBO special he ever made. I really liked his sense of humor and truth in his comedy. Even when he made points about religion that I didn't agree with, he had a way of making me see things from his point of view. Not to mention that his voice was used as the narrator for many Thomas videos. I am glad that we have recordings to remember him with. He bought me great joy and I will personally miss him greatly.

New House Bill Would Ban BPA in Food/Beverage Packaging

Since I didn't get a chance to post something this week for "Thankful Thursday" I thought I would share this:

I am thankful that I found the site www.enviroblog.org. I just have to share an article I found there about a house bill would ban BPA in food, beverage packaging:

"It seems like everyone and their mother knows about the risks associated with bisphenol A in baby bottles and hard plastic water bottles. Okay, so maybe they don't know the specifics. Recently, while trying to explain what I do to a new acquaintance, I got a blank look until I said "that chemical in water bottles" -- then the lightbulb went off. "Oh, the Nalgene thing! Yeah, I tossed mine and got a metal one."

Anyway, all the media attention to plastic reusable drink containers has been a little perplexing for those of us at Enviroblog HQ. It's not that the risk of BPA in baby bottles is negligible, but it's minor compared to the potential exposure from canned infant formula. Like all other food cans, formula cans are lined with a BPA-based epoxy resin that leaches into formula, under normal use, at considerably higher levels than BPA from baby bottles. And what's really important is the combined dosage, day in and day out as infants develop.

But a new bill, brought to the House yesterday by Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), would ban BPA from food and drink containers, including canned infant formula. The ban would affect all canned foods, including prepared foods like soup and pasta which EWG tests found to contain some of the highest levels of BPA. FDA estimates that 17 percent of the US diet is comprised of canned food.

A bill addressing BPA in the Senate would ban the chemical from children's products -- another important step, considering potential exposures from toys, pacifiers and teething instruments that young children put in their mouths. The Senate bill, however, doesn't address food and drink containers. Since many babies are fed canned vegetables starting from 6 months to a year of age, it hardly makes sense to address one and not the other.

Of course, given that there are literally no safety standards for BPA, any legislation at all regulating its use is a significant step forward."

I don't have the time to research all the scary things I hear about in regards to the environment (nor do most of the people I know). I am thankful that there are people out there that are dedicated to sharing information so the rest of us can make more informed decisions. Thanks to everyone who contributes to the Enviroblog site!

No this is not Ryan! But, this is one event that I need to set a scene for:

Today, Scott went to a condo we own to clean it up and get it ready to rent. He took Ryan with him in order to give me a chance to study for an exam. We just had new carpet installed yesterday. Apparently there was a 5 gallon container of paint in the back bedroom and Scott was under the assumption that the lid was attached securely.

Although this (thankfully) isn't a picture of Ryan and our condo was basically empty, Ryan enjoyed some time playing in the paint. Scott has assured me that the carpet isn't a total loss and can be fixed with some remnants and/or cleaned. The same can't be said of Ryan's clothes as they are completely ruined! On the bright side, I think Scott has learned not to underestimate the abilities of a curious, fun-loving toddler like Ryan and we don't think Ryan ate any paint :-)

The Escalator "Ride"

Since having my son almost 2 years ago I have been reminded what it's like to be a kid. Ryan is constantly showing me how much fun it can be to do the most mundane things.

Take today for example, Scott and I took Ryan to the mall. We thought Ryan might like to ride on the carousel. He usually loves it. Today, Ryan literally started crying and hanging on to me for dear life as soon as I put him on it. Due to the trauma we thought might be inflicted on our poor son, we did not make him go on the ride. Instead, we decided to take the escalator down to the kids play area. Ryan loved it! He giggled the whole way down. After we got off he ran to play. When he was finished playing he went to the escalator to go on another "ride". Once again, Ryan laughed with delight.

Ryan has a way of making the world look simple and fun! I just love the way he reminds me what it's like to be a little kid!

"The bill we passed today dramatically expands federal investment into childhood cancer research and education, and will make an historic difference in the lives of the more than 12,000 children who will be diagnosed with cancer each year. A nation with our resources, our scientists, our committed doctors and oncologists, and our inherent and insuppressible fighting spirit can and should do more to put an end to so much suffering."

Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), one of the original co-sponsors of the Carolyn Walker Pryce Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, stated that conquering childhood cancer has transcended partisan politics, and addresses a critical national issue that is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

"I am pleased that the House passed this important legislation, which will bring us one step closer to eradicating pediatric cancer," said Van Hollen. "This bill will enhance and expand pediatric cancer research activities at the National Institutes of Health, establish a pediatric cancer registry, and increase informational and educational outreach efforts to patients and families affected by pediatric cancer. Help our Nation's K-12 Schools Go Green!!

It isn't often that we have the opportunity to pass a truly great piece of legislation, but this week the House of Representatives will vote on a measure that will provide almost $7 billion in grants to help our nations' K-12 schools go green. Called the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act (H.R. 3021), this bill, sponsored by Ben Chandler, will help schools to become more energy efficient and healthier. There is a special emphasis on low-income schools where children are most at risk from unhealthy facilities and on schools that still suffer from the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Why Green Schools? Close to 60 million students spend up to 40 hours a week in facilities that are often unhealthy and a hindrance to their ability to learn. Green schools reduce sick days, significantly improve the health of students with asthma and other respiratory illnesses, and improve student morale and confidence. If this bill passes, we will be taking a huge leap forward toward our goal to make every school in America a green and healthy place to learn, while we save energy and create new green jobs!

Our Representatives need to hear that their vote will improve the lives of millions of our school children. Take action now and send a letter to your Member of Congress.

This quote pretty much sums up my day of subbing a class of five 5-year old boys. On an typical day I will get the occasional crying, whining, etc. that comes from your average 5 year old. Today was not a typical day. It started off with one bot literally crying "I want my Mommy" as soon as he got to class! My day subbing pretty much went down hill from there.

But, once I got home and was able to see Ryan's cute little happy face things improved significantly! However, right now is Ryan is asleep, I am mentally and physically exhausted, and I am about to pour a glass of wine and relax!

I am so thankful that I found a part time job that lets me take my son with me to work. I have been subbing for a couple of preschools in my area. It has been a wonderful experience. I am able to take Ryan to school with me. Although he is in another class I am there if he needs anything. I have subbed for 3 through 4 year olds and they are all so different and special in there own way. It is such a blessing to be able to watch them interact with one another. They have taught me so much...and all this time I thought I was supposed to be the teacher :)

Friends of Josie Nunez

One of my friends, Julie, whom I have known almost my whole life is going through something I still find hard to believe. Her daughter, Josie, who is a darling 8 year old was diagnosed with brain and spinal tumors. Josie has already had the brain tumor removed and is currently undergoing radiation treatment before the second tumor can be removed from her spine.

In order for Josie to receive the care she needed she was care flighted to Cooks Children's Hospital in Fort Wroth along with Julie. There she had been treated since March and just recently was able to go home for a few weeks until she has to go back. Her family has had to travel back and forth to Midland several times, which is a good 300 mile drive. If that wasn't enough, the family has no medical insurance. Besides the emotional hardship the entire family must endure, they also have to worry about the medical bills that have started piling up.

In an attempt to help, a trust has been set up to help with Josie's mounting medical bills. It has been established at Bank of America. It is the Josie Nunez Medical Fund. When I first heard the news about Josie I thought "if this could happen to Josie it could happen to anyone (including my own child). Josie and her family are literally in the fight of their lives. With everything that has been going on in the world lately...devastating earthquakes and cyclones, horrible floods and the various other natural disasters, I am thankful that it didn't rain too much where I live. I am thankful that I have a warm bed to sleep in at night with a man who loves me (and I love him very much too ;). I am thankful for my son. That he is a normal healthy and happy 20 month old that knows both of his parents are here and love him very much no matter what. I am thankful for my siblings and extended family. That they are all doing well and are (for the most part) all healthy and happy. I guess in all fairness I should mention my cats (as I feel like they are a part of my family). I am thankful that they are both still around (after 15 years) to teach me that the really good things in life aren't things and that love really is unconditional.

I want to thank God for all the blessings he continually gives me. A great challenge can often bring life changing rewards. When things happen to me (or you), whether good or bad, I believe we should embrace them. Keep in mind that if we try to do the best we can then God will help us through anything and everything. I believe whole heartily that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. Just when we feel like we could fall apart. Just when we are about to lose it. Something happens that reminds us that He is looking after us and for this I am most thankful.

As some of you may know, Scott and I are debating having another child. On the one hand I would love for Ryan to have a little brother or sister. On the other, I am so happy with Ryan I am afraid of wanting too much and messing everything up. I say this because I am almost 40 years old and I am all but too aware of the complications that can happen with pregnancy and/or childbirth.

But, it finally came to me yesterday...it really isn't up to me or Scott. If we are meant to have another child it is in God's hands. I am so thankful that I have faith in God. That He will take care of everything and that He will not give us any more than He knows we can handle. It is such a blessed feeling to know that everything will work out the way it is meant to. For this I am grateful.

Saturday our neighborhood had its annual spring garage sale. Since Scott had to teach in the morning we weren't able to actually start looking until the late morning. We did find a booster seat and a stool for Ryan. Since it was late and our neighbor was trying to get rid of his remaining items for sale, they decided to give Ryan a toy lawn mower for free. Although it is weathered and sun bleached from being outside all summer, Ryan absolutely adores it!

I took these pictures on Sunday after A & D had dropped Ryan off.

They had picked him up earlier that day to spend some time with him. I had thrown a change of clothes in his bag just in case he needed it. It just happened to be the same outfit his Dad had on that day. They both looked so darn cute...I just had to take some pictures!

Bark Like a Sea Lion?

We received the news today that Ryan has croup. Croup has an unmistakable sound — a harsh, repetitive cough similar to the noise of a seal barking. Croup is one of those things that I have heard of but haven't bothered to learn much about - probably because I had no need to, until today that is! So, for those of you who aren't familiar with it, croup is breathing difficulty accompanied by a "barking" cough. Croup, which is swelling around the vocal cords, is common in infants and children and can have a variety of causes and generally lasts for 3 - 5 days. Ryan is on day 2 or 3. Although he sounds horrible, Ryan has been up and playing all day long.

I wish "Peckham's Home Remedy" worked. Instead, Ryan will be taking cough medicine and a steroid, oh and breathing treatments (which make Ryan cry because he hates them so much). Which means for the next 4 days I will have a speedy, sleepy, and at times cranky toddler to take care of. Oh well, it could be worse, at least I'm not sick (yet).

Sick and Tired of Being Sick

Since having Ryan my family has basically been sick with one thing or another. You know small children really are like little petri dishes. First, they share all their germs with every other little kid they come within ten feet of. Then they bring all those germs home to share with their family. At least that's what Ryan does.

Well this time Dad was the one to bring the germs home! Scott started feeling bad on Friday. Of course he didn't think he was sick, he just thought he had a fever and was tired because he was exhausted from working so hard this week (I wish). Today he finally broke down and went to the doc-in-the-box. Turns out he has an infection that has caused a sinus infection and bronchitis. Apparently, Scott is as giving as Ryan because now Ryan is coming down with something and I'm not feeling that great either.

In an attempt to avoid getting cooties from my Little Man and Big Guy I am taking Emergen-C and going to bed by 10 o'clock. I'll let you know how it turns out. I am so sick of these guys getting sick!

Visiting the Duck Pond

Practically every day we take Ryan to feed the pigeons and ducks at the local duck pond. It's always a new adventure. One day I even had a goose chase me while I was carrying Ryan!

I think the ducks are even getting to know who we are. Mainly because whenever we arrive the ducks start making their way towards us - it's great. I was able to have a duck literally eat out of my hand while Ryan was standing next to me. When Ryan reached out to pet the duck it slowly waddled away, it was so cute.

Anyway, I took Ryan yesterday and we had a blast. We've even started naming the different ducks. It always makes him laugh when we call the "Crazy Goose" to come over so we can feed it. I think because he remembers that same goose playing chase with us! Hopefully, feeding the ducks and pigeons will be a fond childhood memory for him. I know it's one that his parents will cherish.

My Dream Bedding

For some reason I have been in a redecorating mode lately. I have been wanting to update my master bedroom for some time now. With the summer fast approaching I have to get it done or wait until the fall. For two days this week I drove all over town looking at bedding and fabric, getting ideas and becoming more and more confused. I found a couple of things that I thought were OK, but nothing I just fell in love with. So last night I tried looking online and this is what I found. I LOVE it! There's just one problem...to get the bedding ensemble I would have to spend over $1,000! Which is way over my budget.

Okay, so now I am somewhat depressed about my find. I wish I never found my dream bedding. Now I know it's out there. But, on the other hand, I am even more motivated to find this look for less money. If anyone has any ideas of where I can find affordable bedding or fabric online or in the DFW area please let me know. I have to do something in less than two weeks and I am starting to feel the pressure, ugh!

I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for a wonderful husband that takes care of me and our son. Who loves me for who I am, the good, the bad and the ugly. I am thankful that he is my best friend and is with me through the good times and the not so good times. Right now we are both sick. I am thankful that my husband and I take care of each other no matter what. I know there are not many people I can say that about and I am very thankful I can say that about him.

Today, I am even thankful that my son gave me his virus. For a long time I wanted a child and now that I have one I think I should be a little more thankful to everything my child blesses me with. Even his cooties.

I am especially thankful for my husband and my son for making my life feel complete. I hope they feel as loved as they make me feel.

The other day, when I picked up Ryan from school, I had to go by and pay his tuition. I was talking to the director of the program and she told me that kids these days aren't learning how to spell like I did when I was a kid. She said that since everything was computerized the kids just rely on spell check. I guess this is just another example of people getting lazier due to technology. Kind of like not having to actually get up to change the channel on the TV.

This all got me thinking of how much I rely on technology. I hardly ever read any books anymore. The last book I read was "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom (the electricity was out during a thunderstorm). Now I just look up what I want to know on the computer. Even better is when I can learn something by watching the history channel. Hell, right now my two favorite shows on TV are the Tudors and John Adams, both of which are based on historical facts.

In order to set a good example for my son and to enrich my personal growth I am going to attempt to read a book from start to finish. Sounds easy enough, right? So does taking a shower but throw a vivacious toddler in the mix and see what happens. Since having Ryan I can now take a shower in 5 minutes flat! With this in mind I have chosen the book shown above. It looked like a fun and easy read. Who knows, maybe I'll remember how much I enjoy reading a good book.

Am I a Terrible Mother?

Last week Ryan was sick. All week long I took care of him and got little to no sleep. Sure Scott helped me but, for the most part, I took care of the little man. Caring for child isn't easy but caring for a a sick toddler is just plain exhausting. I love my son very much but even so it is hard having someone you love constantly needing your undivided attention. Ryan is feeling much better this week. However, his mother is a complete mess this week. She is mentally exhausted and behind in everything she has to do.

In order to get a few things done and to give myself a break I am considering putting Ryan in school 2 additional days this month. He really likes school and I want to get some painting done before school is out for the summer. Makes sense right? Then why am I feeling so guilty? How come as a mother if you aren't 110% all of the time then you feel this weight of guilt and shame. I know for a fact that I am not the only mother out there who feels this way whenever she gives herself a break. I suppose right now I am feeling like I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't. This is the part of motherhood that I can truly say SUCKS!

Meeting Shana

I wasn't sure if I should post about this or not. But I have now realized and accepted that blogging is a sort of therapy (at least for me it is).

Anyway, last Wednesday I met Scott's old girlfriend Shana. Scott dated Shana while he was writing his thesis for his PhD and just out of college. They dated over a long period of time but didn't live in the same place for very long. Most of their relationship was considered "long distance". Even so they were very much in love at one time.

Shana was in town from DC for a wedding and she came over and then we all went to meet A & D for lunch. I was (understandably) a little anxious about meeting her. But once we were introduced I knew that she was a nice person. After having lunch with A & D, Shana went back with them to see their office. Scott, Ryan and I met them at the office after getting a drink at Happy Hour (at Sonic of course). After chatting with Shana, A & D had to get back to work. We took Shana to the park so I could play with Ryan while she and Scott spent time catching up with each other. After that she came back to the house to hang out for a bit before she had to leave to meet her friends.

Believe it or not, there was once a time when Shana really got to me. Actually, it wasn't Shana that bothered me. I mean really, how could she? I had never even met her. In reality it was the thought that Scott had loved someone other than me enough to think of marrying them. There was a period when I even thought that I might have once been a Shana rebound! Scott had to reassure me that that was not the case and that he loved me and was glad he married me (in my own defense, I was pregnant and hormonal when we had that conversation).

I look back now and can't believe I was ever so insecure in my relationship with Scott. I am glad that I met Shana. She is really a good person, she was sweet and I really like her. I can see why Scott dated her and was once in love with her. I can also look at Scott now and know that he loves me and is happy with the choices he has made. I took a picture of Shana with Scott & Ryan so we could remember the day we all shared together. I know Scott cares for Shana and I sincerely hope that they keep in touch and remain lifelong friends.

It's funny for me to say this but, I think I finally understand why older woman often say they like, accept and know themselves more than they did when they were younger. Of course this in no way means that I am aging! It just means I am getting the benefit of living longer than I once had.

Introducing Butterflies

Today Scott had to work today so Ryan and I decided to go out and have some fun. We went to the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens so I could introduce Ryan to butterflies. The butterfly exhibit was great. When we got there, Ryan went in and didn't know what we were looking at at first. Then a couple of beautiful blue and somewhat large butterflies flew right in front of him and the chase was on. He followed different butterflies throughout the exhibition.

At the end of the exhibition we saw a very large moth. This moth was approximately two hands wide and was spectacular. It is hard to imagine the size of this moth. Just to give you an idea the tree it is on was about 12" in diameter. It was such a magnificent creature.

After chasing the butterflies Ryan wanted to go outside and look at the flowers. Unfortunately he couldn't keep still long enough for me to take a decent picture. This just means we will have to go back again sometime. We both like it there so I'm sure we'll make it back again soon.

Our Little Designated Driver

Since getting married and having Ryan, Scott and I don't get out and "party" like we used to. We currently joke about going to Happy Hour. Of course, the Happy Hour we are referring to is the one at Sonic for half priced fountain drinks. This particular afternoon we met Poppy and Mimzy at Happy Hour so they could see Ryan for a little bit before they had to go back to work. While the adults were chatting, Ryan was playing in Mimzy's car. He liked it so much he started crying when we had to leave.

On the way home we took Ryan to the park. He liked the wooden truck at the park a lot that day too. This got us thinking...maybe we could get Ryan to be our designated driver when we go to Happy Hour! (I can still dream can't I ?)

The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act of 2007

Julie is an old and dear friend of mine. I have known her since 8th grade (and I'm now almost 40 years old!) She has a 9 year old daughter, Josie, who was just diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. When we heard that Josie was sick we wanted to do anything we could to help. Unfortunately, all we could do was pray for Josie and her family. Then I found this information online. Please take a few minutes needed to help and then spread the word to increase awareness.

There is legislation in the Senate right now for the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. This will provide 150 million dollars over 5 years dedicated just to childhood cancer in order to expand childhood cancer research, create a national childhood cancer registry to track pediatric cancer, and increase services to patients and families affected by the disease. There are 52 senators that support this bill right now and we need 8 more to reach 60, which would make a majority to help pass this landmark legislation.

Mommy Chaos

1st Time Out on the Boat

Saturday we went out on the boat for the first time since Poppy had it fixed. As a gift to us for Christmas, A & D put the boat in a slip at Joe Pool Lake. The weather was so nice this weekend that we thought it would be a good time to take it out. It didn't take Ryan long to get used to being on it. He was a little impatient while waiting for Scott and Poppy to get the boat filled up with gas. But once we were on our way he was fine.

Mimzy and Poppy were nice enough to get a loaf of bread so we could all feed the ducks. At least that was the idea. When we got the bread out to start feeding the ducks, Ryan decided to have a slice. By the time it we got back to the marina, Ryan had eaten almost 4 slices!

Since I had never been out on the boat before I got an idea of what to expect. It was nice and fairly relaxing to be on the lake. Although it was a bit chilly out on the water, I could picture being out on a hot sunny day. I can't wait, I may actually be able to get a tan this summer!

The AIDS Outreach Center is the leading organization in Tarrant and eight surrounding rural counties serving men, women and children with HIV and their families, educating the public about HIV prevention and advocating for sound HIV public policy. Happy Easter

Ryan went on his first Easter Egg hunt yesterday. It was held at the church that Ryan goes to school twice a week. Within the church is a courtyard with a playground and that is where the eggs were hidden. Ryan knows his way around the church so I thought he would be more likely to participate since he would be in a familiar place.

Once the hunt began, he didn't seem to understand what the big deal was. After picking up his first filled plastic egg he decided to open it and play with the egg itself. After some coaxing I got him to pick up two more eggs.

After that he decided it would be more fun to play on the play ground. He played and played and played.

We all enjoyed the Easter egg hunt and even though I like all the eggs, chocolate, and the Easter Bunny, I am looking forward to the day that Ryan can understand the real meaning of Easter. Until then we'll just let him be a very blessed and loved little boy.

Why I Love my Husband

Today I went to the doctor to have a procedure done to reduce the pain in my back. I had an MRI which showed that I have little cartilage between a couple of vertebrae in my lower back. This causes me a lot of pain in my back and hips. The doctor first gave me three shots to help block pain, then he put a needle in my back that sent radio waves (for 60 seconds) directly to the nerves near the vertebrae causing the pain (3 different nerves). The radio waves will basically kill the nerves for a while until they grow back. All I know is that it felt like I was being stabbed for 60 seconds with a hot sharp knife.

After the procedure I got a couple of perscriptions (for pain) filled. When I got home Scott was playing with Ryan. Scott told me that he would watch Ryan for the day so I could take my pain meds and relax. He is so nice to me!

I know this act of kindness wasn't a big deal to Scott but it was a very big deal to me. It gave me a chance to relax (like the doctor ordered) and helped me to get the pain under control. If he hadn't done this I am sure I would have overdone it which would cause me to be in even more pain. This is just another reason why I love my husband!

Home Sweet Home!

I survived a short spring break road trip with a toddler! To make a long story short....

The hotel screwed up our reservation and gave us a single room with a king sized bed instead of a suite. Ryan had to sleep with Scott and I so none of us slept very well. Ryan was fussy more than usual during the trip because he is teething and the lack of sleep. We ended up leaving a day early because of the sleeping arrangements and it was raining.

The trip wasn't a total loss though. We did take Ryan to the Riverwalk. He seemed to like the boat ride and all the people. Ryan really is a "people person".

After the boat ride, we stopped to get some dinner. It was getting late and Ryan was starting to get a little cranky. Luckily, after a little fussing Ryan decided he would act silly instead. He thought it was cute that he could hold a spoon in his mouth while shaking his head from side to side.

The next day we took Ryan to Sea World. He watched as I fed the dolphins (he was somewhat intimidated by their sheer size).

Ryan wanted to do some running around so we found a good spot for him to have a snack and roam around.

I think all the excitement wore us all out. The next day on the trip home Ryan slept almost the entire time (a little over 4 hours)!

Spring Break Toddler Style

Spring Break officially started today :) Scott & I are feeling a little adventurous so we are taking Ryan on a short road trip to San Antonio. We thought we could take Ryan to Sea World and check out the Riverwalk, etc.

Little did I know when I planned this trip what planning would have to occur in order to go. We will only be gone 4 days but I am feel like I am packing for a 10-day overseas journey. When I was single I would go to Europe once a year (twice if I was really lucky). When I would go it would be for weeks on end. Even then it didn't take me as long to pack and plan.

I am taking a break right now from packing. I'm just about finished, just waiting for the last load of clothes to dry. I am so tired that I just want to go to bed and finish in the morning but I know that would be a huge mistake. Ryan will be up at the crack of dawn so I have to get everything done tonight or else it may never get done. Let's just hope I don't forget anything important. I'll let you know in a couple of days. Wish us luck...looks like we may need it ;)

Draggin' Ass

Last night I went to bed at 9pm (again), with the hope that if I got plenty of sleep I would feel better in the morning. Sounds simple enough, huh? Well, Scott decided to stuff the Easter eggs for the church Easter egg hunt at midnight. Our bedroom is fairly close to the kitchen where he was busy stuffing plastic eggs. He didn't realize how loud he was being and accidentally woke me up. I was able to go back to sleep easy enough.

Then at 1:30 am Ryan woke up crying. I went in to see what was wrong and since he's not talking yet I played the guessing game. Dirty diaper? No. Want a drink of water? No. Hungry, ahh, of course. He is on steroids (to help his ear infection, sinusitis and bronchitis) which increase his appetite a lot! I fed him and finally got him back to sleep.

When I went to go back to bed it was 2:30 am. Then Ryan woke up again at 5 am. This time Scott told me that Ryan was asleep and just making noises (Ryan does that sometimes, he'll just yelp and when you run in to see what's wrong he is sound asleep. Ryan finally woke up for good at 6am. I don't have any idea how much rest either of us actually got. All I know is that I am draggin' ass (as Scott would say) and it's only 10am!

Is everyone this damn tired or is it just the mommies out there?

We're All Falling Apart Over Here

As you know Ryan has been sick the past several weeks. First with pink eye, then an ear infection, then the flu! Well, on Friday Ryan woke up wheezing and I knew something was wrong. I took him to the doctor again. Our regular pediatrician was out so I had to take him to Cooks Children's Clinic. After several chest and sinus x-rays Ryan was diagnosed with sinusitis, bronchitis and an ear infection! They immediately put him on breathing treatments for his bronchitis, antibiotics and a steroid for his ear and sinus infections. My poor little man. I feel so bad! I should have known something was wrong. I just thought he might still have the flu so I didn't think much of it until he started wheezing!

If that wasn't bad enough, I woke up Saturday with a major ear ache, sore throat and cough. Scott teaches on Saturday mornings so I had to call in the troops (aka A & D). They were nice enough to come over to watch Ryan (who was zinging around like a toddler on speed thanks to the steroid). I went to a doc-in-the-box and two hours later found out that I have sinusitis and an ear infection! They gave me a steroid shot and sent me home with a script for an antibiotic. We're just all falling apart over here!

Last night I didn't fall asleep until almost 2 am (thanks to the steroid shot). I had to take not one but two sleeping pills to finally fall asleep. Ryan was up at 6:30 am! Scott fed him and then needed help with the breathing treatment. Have you ever tried to hold a toddler still with something over his face for 5 minutes? It should be a test on Survivor! Then I had to give him his speed....I mean medicine. I just wanted to go back to bed. Scott was sweet enough (after some coaxing) to take care of Ryan so I could get some rest.

I just woke up and Scott took Ryan to meet Poppy and Mimzy (A & D) for lunch. When he gets back he has to go fix a tenants sink in Dallas so I will be on my own for a couple of hours with Ryan. Hopefully the medicine's speed like effect will wear off by then. All I know is Ryan goes to bed around 7 pm and his Mommy will be in bed by no later than 7:15 pm!

Some Crazy Texas Weather

Yesterday it was like spring at 68° F and today it's snowing!! Here in Texas when it snows it is a major event. Everything shuts down, it's great! Since Scott didn't have to work tonight thanks to the "snow" he thought it would be fun to introduce Ryan to snow. Ryan was memorized!

People who live where it snows must think we are a bunch of sissy's. I think they are just jealous because they have to work, go to school, etc., when it snows and we don't. Just one reason to love being a Texan :)

Ready or not Ryan went back to school at TELC today. The good news is Scott & I have managed to miss getting sick so far (knock wood). That being said, there really is no bad news :)

Grumpy Flu Pants

Well, the "Grumpy Pants Family" just became the "Grumpy Flu Pants Family". The flu bug decided to stop by and pay Ryan a visit. Poor Ryan has been sick the past couple of days with an ear infection. We decided to take him to the doctor today because he didn't seem to be getting better although he has been on antibiotics for the past several days. Sure enough, Dr. C tested Ryan for the flu and the test came back positive. Poor Ryan! It looks like he will miss school this week. Dr. C also warned Scott and I that we have a good chance of getting sick!

If that isn't bad enough, we had to postpone a dinner party we had planned for Saturday night. I have never had a dinner party and I thought it would be fun to have some friends over. But, since Ryan is expected to be sick for about a week I thought it would be best to postpone the party until we were all feeling better. I'm sure our guests wouldn't appreciate it if they were to get sick because they came over and our home was still contaminated with flu cooties!
